Sexing Your gerbil

You may find yourself in a position where you need to sex your animals. I personally would advise this when buying animals from a petshop especially, as more often than not they get the sex wrong and you end up with babies!

Adults are fairly obvious, and with males it really is difficult to miss-sex them. They have very obvious testes and an obvious bump at the base of their tail, their scent gland is also much larger and more noticiable.

Pups can be sexed within days, be to be sure it is best to wait until around day 8-14. The females will have 8 nipples and a small scent gland, the males can have some 'nipple dents' (one or two, but never 8) but the best way to sex is by looking at the size of the scent gland.

The next age to sex is from day 25 onwards, you should see the beginning of testicles developing in the males.
