Gerbil Shows I have entered in

Below are our results from Gerbil shows we have entered. I would like to get the full results but unfortunately they have not been announced so I can only provide the main results.

January 22nd 2005 - Bradford Championship Show

I entered 11 Gerbils into the competition, but once I got there there had been a mistake with my list I was given and the secretary had missed off Tallinn, we didn't like to mention anything and so carried on and just entered the rest. It seemed a shame that we had got the three boys out of bed and made them go to Doncaster, but never mind. It turned out later on that he was supposed to be entered, just I hadn't been given a sticker for him, but by that time I had offered my showpen for a nother member to use who was having some problems with some gerbillus nanus ah well.

So, after what seems like an age of waiting for everyone to arrive, including the judges - we ended up sitting there for 2 HOURS before judging started, I feel sorry for the secretary, Brian, lord knows how long he arrived before us!!! Sorry, but two hours before judging finally started is just not on. A few hours later and finally juding ends and awards are given out. BIS went to an excellent Nutmeg owned by Geoff De Rouxx - This Nutmeg had amazing ticking on it, and fully deserved the honour of BIS - It looked black from afar! We won a few 1sts 2nds and 3rds, but none of the larger awards like Best White Bellied etc.

From the results it may change my breeding plans, as we did well in the Honey classes. However, as we only had one Saffron from two litters, we are unsure whether or not we actually have good Saffrons, so I might carry on as before, but also use the Honeys that I get from pairings.

My full results were as follows:

Saffie - 1st Saffron Junior

Tye - 2nd Honey any variety Adult

Sicily - 3rd Honey any variety Adult

Cole - 3rd Nutmeg any variety Adult

Madison - 1st Honey any variety Adult
2nd White Bellied Challenge Adult

Obikwelu - 2nd Nutmeg any variety Adult
2nd Adult Challenge
3rd Male Challenge

Nairobi - 2nd Honey any variety Junior
2nd Junior Challenge
2nd White Bellied Challenge Junior
3rd Grand Challenge
3rd Female Challenge

As you can tell I might not be too happy about showing, I just don't think it's for me... Next show, as I changed our subscription to the NGS to a joint account with Pete, he can show and I'll arrive later on as I just really don't enjoy sitting around all day, plus the stress of getting everything sorted, and making sure your Gerbils are perfect... Just isn't for me, I'd rather pop along later on, perhaps chat to some people and then leave once results are announced.

These are the main results as follows from the Sheffield Show on the 19th June 2004:

BIS - Sonya Paul
BOS - Liz
BOA - Liz
Best Exotic - Rachael
Best Pet - Daniel Cope
Best Juvenile - Daniel Cope
Best Novice - Sonya

For the show Pete and I entered four of our Gerbils. We entered our female pair - Sydney Argente Cream and Kyoto a Lightened Colourpoint Golden Agouti. We also entered our breeding pair, Dakota a Dark Eyed Honey and Siena a Red Eyed Honey.

Our full list of results were:

First - Argente Cream

First - Red Eyed Honey

First - Best Opposite Sex

First - Best Opposite Age

First - Best White Bellied

Second - Unstandardised

For the best in show competition, as we got BOS and BOA this meant we came second and third overall in show. Kyoto also earned herself a 'Special' Rosette, this is when the judge likes the Gerbil but it is not quite good enough to have got a first.

Below are some photos of my winners and then the BIS Gerbil, owned by Sonya Paul of Kindred Stud in Caithness Scotland.

BIS Winner, a Juvenile Black male

BOS - Siena a Juvenile Red Eyed Honey Female

BOA and Best White Bellied - Sydney an Adult Argente Cream female

2nd in Unstandardised and Special Rosette winner - Kyoto an Adult Light Colourpoint Golden Agouti Female

18th September 2004

Sheffield Show - Or rather, not a true show, but more of an exhibition or display.

This was scheduled to be a show, but unfortunately no NGS judges were available and thus it ended up being a display instead. As it was only a display not many members actually came for it, there were just three members, but 5 all together as Eddie Cope took along his son and wife - Cath (who is actually a member of the committee). So, there was Eddie, Cath, Rachael and myself along with Dan who was running riot around the hall with Eddie paying no attention ;)

There was a variety of animals on show... Including some of my own mongolians, some Eddie took along, Jerboas, Shaws Jirds and Gerbillus species'. We had a good time looking at the varieties on show and petted a few of them and took photos.. Well naturally! Rachael got roped into judging the pet section and I had to break some kids hearts by judging their art competition... Awwww

The photos below are of, what I believe to be Jaculus Orientalis - A type of Jerboa. This Jerboa is much larger than the other Jerboas on show, owned by Rach. (Photos are further down the page)

When asleep jerboas sleep pretty deeply, and can easily be picked up and moved around. Sometimes so, that they won't even realise you have cleaned out their tanks! You must also never give them water as this will over-ride their kidneys and can cause them to die :(

Below is a mini Shaws Jird, these are much smaller than that of a 'normal' Shaws, they are about the same size as a mongolian gerbil, just with the temperament of a Shaws Jird - sounds perfect to me!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

A Schimmel... I have no idea how Eddie managed to go home with this little guy. Ain't he gorgeous?? Hmmmmm I want one!

Here is Rach's jerboa, this is a Four-Toed Jerboa or Jaculus Allactaga tetradactyla.

And this is a Lesser Egyptian Jerboa or Jaculus Jaculus .
